چکیده

The light curves (time series of the radiated energy) of most large amplitude, pulsating stars such as the well known Cepheid stars are regular. However, a smaller group of variable stars that are located next to them in the HertzsprungRussell diagram undergoes irregular light variations and exhibits irregular radial velocities as well. The mechanism behind this irregular behavior was a long standing mystery. A flow reconstruction technique based on the observed lightcurves of six separate stars shows that their underlying dynamics is chaotic and low dimensional (d = 4). Furthermore, we present evidence that the physical mechanism behind the behavior is the nonlinear interaction of just two pulsation eigenmodes. In a generalized Shil’nikov scenario, the pulsation energy alternates continuously, but irregularly between a lower frequency mode that is linearly unstable and thus growing, and a stable overtone that gets entrained through a low order resonance (2:1), but that wants to decay. The flow reconstruction from the stellar light curve thus yields interesting physical insight into the pulsation mechanism.

Heat Transfer in a Column Packed With Spheres

The purpose of the study is to investigate average and local surface heat transfer coefficients in a cylinder packed with spheres. Here the term «local» applies to a single sphere within the bed. Averages are derived from the sixteen different spheres that were instrumented and distributed throughout the bed. The experimental technique consisted of introducing a step - wise change in the temper...

A Numerical Study of Flow and Heat Transfer Between Two Rotating Vertically Eccentric Spheres with Time- Dependent Angular Velocities

The transient motion and the heat transfer of a viscous incompressible flow contained between two vertically eccentric spheres maintained at different temperatures and rotating about a common axis with different angular velocities is numerically considered when the angular velocities are an arbitrary functions of time. The resulting flow pattern, temperature distribution, and heat transfer char...

The Assessment of Applying Chaos Theory for Daily Traffic Estimation

Road traffic volumes in intercity roads are generally estimated by probability functions, statistical techniques or meta-heuristic approaches such as artificial neural networks. As the road traffic volumes depend on input variables and mainly road geometrical design, weather conditions, day or night time, weekend or national holidays and so on, these are also estimated by pattern recognition te...

The Influence of Poincaré’s Thoughts on the Origins of Random and Chance in Works of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage

Chance is a broad concept which has become an important factor in linking science and art in the twentieth century. Simultaneously, concept emerged as a new scientific paradigm in Arts by Henry Poincaré and especially Marcel Duchamp, who has affected many artists such as John Cage, one of aleatoric music pioneers .This paper investigates the differences and similarities of the chance concept in...

A Novel Approach for Optimization of Transportation Problem in Chaos Environment

Nature is characterized by its chaotic behavior. Mathematics is considered one of the appropriate tools to achieve the best definition of possible its chaos variables and process. Classical mathematics deals with the numbers as static and meaningless, but chaos mathematics deals with it as dynamic evolutionary, and value- added. This paper attempts to introduce the transportation problem re...

Language, Music, and Brain

Introduction: Over the last centuries, scientists have been trying to figure out how the brain is learning the language. By 1980, the study of brain-language relationships was based on the study of human brain damage. But since 1980, neuroscience methods have greatly improved. There is controversy about where music, composition, or the perception of language and music are in the brain, or wheth...
